During the reigns of the last two Qing emperors, the Ullmann along with Vrard house became the sole suppliers of imperial clocks and watches. In the autobiography "I Was the Emperor of China," Pu Yi recounted his escape from Beijing in association with Ullmann:
"Ullmann was located at the western end of the Legation Quarter; It was a foreign shop selling clocks and cameras. To get rid of the surveillance of Zhang, a collaborator of my father, I went into Ullmann's shop. To make time drag, I bought a French pocket watch.."
In 1918 Ullmann took over Bovet's business, he also became the first foreign watch merchant in Beijing. (source A. Chapuis "La Montre Chinoise").
