Beautiful pair cased verge fusee watch.
Diameter of outer case is 59mm, inner case is 50mm, thickness is 32mm, weight is hefty 142 grams.
Dial and movement are signed by
Urton in London.
Movement is solidly made and features early grotesque mask in calm classical manner, typical for early XVIII movements.
The cock design, as well as it's almost D-shaped leg and Egyptian pillars of the movement allow to date the watch to 1730 approximately.
Back cover features repoussé ornament signed by
Cochin.
This is quite early production in the repoussé technique, the scene is detailed and features many figures.
You can also see that the ornament is even with silver from inside. It allows to avoid the holes on its protruding elements - the common problem of these cases.
Later silver repoussé cases are simpler, without ornament filling from inside and featuring less detailed scenes.
Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Elder (1688–1754) was a French engraver and draughtsman, known for his elegant reproductive engravings after major painters and for his precise, disciplined handling of line. He was a member of the Académie Royale and belonged to a prominent Parisian artistic milieu, with a reputation rooted in technical refinement, clarity of composition, and polished execution.
Outer case depicts the scene of "
Family of Darius before Alexander" - showing Alexander's mercy to the family of defeated Darius. This subject became popular after Veronese painting c. 1565.
The main message is that true sovereignty is proven not by conquest, but by merciful and self-controlled treatment of the defeated.

The case is good condition, with common losses to the ornament.
The movement is in running condition, time keeping not tested.
Silver champleve dial appears to be in good condition.
